Softonic review

A turn-based shooter set in the Cold War era

Phantom Doctrine has a 40+ hour campaign where you fight against regular army soldiers and other spies in order to progress the plot. It is similar to XCom except that there is only one shooter and there is more interactivity with the environment. The environments feel randomly generated rather than handcrafted, and the damage system is so uneven that a random-damage meter may have been a better move. Nevertheless, a lot of work has gone into the campaign mode, which is going to scratch an itch for fans of tactical turn-based shooters such as Xcom and the early Fallout games. It is not a bad game, it is just not as mind-blowing after the first eight hours of play, which is the point where you are unable to get your money back for a refund.

PROS

  • Lots of story to trudge through
  • Connect information on a cork board to progress

CONS

  • Camera angles are much too close
  • Random to-hit chances are frustrating and unfair
